Compressor Failure Sub-Zero units often use dual compressors, one for the refrigerator and one for the freezer. When a compressor fails, cooling stops in the affected section and must be replaced with a manufacturer-specific sealed system compressor, such as an Embraco or equivalent OEM unit.
Evaporator Coil Leaks Sub-Zero refrigerators are known for developing leaks in the aluminum evaporator coils, especially in older models with R134a refrigerant. A leak reduces refrigerant pressure and causes ice buildup or warm temperatures in the fresh food compartment.
Condenser Fan Motor Failure The condenser fan helps dissipate heat from the sealed system. If the fan motor fails, it causes the compressor to overheat and shut down prematurely, often resulting in poor cooling performance or complete system failure.
Defective Thermistors Thermistors monitor temperature and send data to the control board. A faulty thermistor may cause erratic temperature regulation or prevent the compressor and fans from activating correctly.
Control Board Failure (Jazz Board or Main Board) The electronic control board governs compressor, fan, and defrost functions. When this part fails, the unit may not cool, may not enter defrost mode, or may display error codes and flashing lights on the interface.
Defrost Heater Malfunction The defrost heater melts frost off the evaporator coils during scheduled cycles. If the heater burns out or the defrost sensor fails, frost accumulates on the coils and blocks airflow, resulting in warm cabinet temperatures and ice buildup.
Door Gasket Leaks Cracked, hardened, or misaligned door gaskets allow warm, moist air into the compartment. This leads to condensation, excessive frost, and increased compressor run time, reducing energy efficiency and food preservation quality.
Ice Maker Failures (Module or Valve Related) Sub-Zero ice makers may fail due to faulty fill valves, broken ice maker modules, or frozen water lines. Common symptoms include no ice production, slow production, or ice cubes that are too small due to restricted water flow.
Water Filter Blockage A clogged water filter can restrict water flow to the ice maker or dispenser system. Sub-Zero recommends replacing the filter every 6 to 12 months to maintain pressure and water quality.
Refrigerant Leaks in the Sealed System Low refrigerant levels due to leaks in copper or aluminum tubing can cause one or both compartments to lose cooling. These repairs require a sealed system rebuild, including replacement of the compressor, evaporator, condenser, filter drier, and a complete refrigerant recharge.
